Summer Sizzle

Although the air conditions were again bad at Rutgers, Scarlet swimmers had a strong showing at the Summer Sizzle meet this past weekend.  For the second year in a row, Scarlet won the team championship.  SAC swimmers also broke 6 team records in the meet.  

Dylan McDermott broke five 11-12 boys records in the 100 Free (1:02.52), 200 IM (2:34.35), 100 Back (1:12.58), 200 Free (2:14.04), and 200 Back (2:33.91).  The women's 800 Free relay team of Kristen Steenvoorden, Alexa Hetzel, Ashley Steenvoorden, and Veronica Feltrin broke the 15-19 girls record with a time of 8:43.37.  In addition, Austin Steel added the 400 IM sectional cut with a time of 4:54.09.  Great job!

Heat Madness

Thanks to all the parents who worked this weekend at making our Heat Madness meet a very successful one.  It was a long day, but our parents once again made the experience a great one for the swimmers.  In the meet, SAC swimmers swam to 122 new best times.  In addition, Kristen Steenvoorden added a new sectional cut in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:26.53.  Congratulations to everyone on a great meet!

Memorial Day Meet

The Memorial Day weekend brought with it the first meet of the LC season, and there were some outstanding early season performances by SAC swimmers.  In the meet there were three team records broken, and there were two summer Junior National cuts achieved.  Highlights are below:

Dylan McDermott broke team records in the boys 11-12 100 Back (1:12.82) and 200 Free (2:16.12).  The 200 Free record had been in existence since SAC's first summer as a club.

Kevin Jan broke the team record in the boys 11-12 50 Fly (30.60).  This record was also from SAC's first summer.  Congratulations on breaking these "ancient" SAC records!

Darren Ankosko achieved a summer junior national cut in the 200 Free (1:56.94), and Ashley Steenvoorden got the summer junior cut in the 800 Free (9:01.09).

Recent Scarlet Honors

Club

For the third consecutive year, Scarlet has been recognized by USA Swimming as a Silver Medal Club in the USA Swimming Club Excellence Program.  The USA Swimming Club Excellence Program is a voluntary program that identifies and recognizes USA Swimming clubs for their commitment to excellence in operation, performance, and the support and development of USA Swimming. This program strives to meet the following objectives:

  • Promote the development of comprehensive age group and senior swimming programs.
  • Provide ways that USA Swimming can better assist, encourage, and motivate our member clubs to strive for the highest ideals of development and performance.
  • Encourage USA Swimming’s most successful professional coaches to become leaders in the sport through involvement in local or national governance.

The program’s goal is to embrace leadership and excellence in USA Swimming’s top member clubs. Coach Henry Fryczynski was named the American Swimming Coaches Association Age Group Coach of the Year for New Jersey for the 2005 season.  This season, Henry was once again nominated for the award which honors coaches who work primarily with 11-14 year old swimmers.  He was nominated along with two other coaches from New Jersey for the 2006 season.  The award will be announced at this summer's JO's.

Head Coach Tom Speedling was named by USA Swimming as a National Team Coach for the 2005-2008 quadrennium.  For info on the National Team and National Team coaches click here.

College Signings

The last Scarlet seniors have decided where they will attend college.  Sam Mintz will attend the University of Delaware (click here for the Delaware press release on the signing), Joan Baltazar will attend the University of Massachusetts, Kim Tsui and Jennifer Lin will attend Rutgers University, and Stephanie Petrelis will attend the University of Mary Washington.  Congratulations!

Rebecca Soni 4th at World Championships

USA Spring Championships, Spring Juniors, Zone Championships

Scarlet swimmers had a successful finish to the season with swimmers competing in the USA Spring Championships, NCSA Spring Junior Nationals, and the Eastern Zone Championships. Highlights are below:

Spring Championships - Federal Way, Washington                                                             

Darren Ankosko - finished 28th in the 1500 Free (16:17.79), 30th in the 800 Free (8:32.57), 41st in the 200 Free (1:57.40), and 44th in the 400 Free (4:09.87).

Ashley Steenvoorden - in her first National Championships, Ashley swam in four events finishing with best times in the 800 Free (9:07.64), 200 Free (2:09.66), and the 1500 Free (17:46.79).

Missy Lang - also in her first National Championships, Missy swam the 200 Breast (2:44.04), and 100 Breast (1:16.86).  

Spring Juniors - Orlando, Florida

Ali Christie - in her first Junior national meet, Ali competed in the 400 IM (4:39.87).

Eastern Zones - Long Island, New York

Holly Rebovich was one of the stars for New Jersey as she finished first in the 13-14 1000 Free (10:27.26), second in the mile (17:48.54), 4th in the 500 Free (5:10.62), 9th in the 200 Free (1:58.53), and 13th in the 100 Free (56.57).

Dylan McDermott - finished third in the 11-12 500 Free (5:18.46), 7th in the 200 IM (2:15.03), and 8th in the 200 Fly (2:17.88).

Kevin Jan - finished 11th in the 11-12 100 Fly (1:03.66), and 13th in the 50 Fly (27.68).

Taylor Wiedecker- finished 10th in the 10 & under 500 Free (6:01.43), and 16th in the 200 Free (2:18.64).

NCAA Championships Wrap Up

Scarlet achieved another first last week when Rebecca Soni became the first Scarlet swimmer to win an NCAA Championship.  Despite suffering from a stomach virus that left her weak and unable to sleep or eat properly, Reb won the 200 Breast (2:09.37), finished second in the 100 Breast (1:00.07), and 11th in the 200 IM (2:00.33).  She finished the season undefeated in the 200 Breast with the fastest time in the country.  Reb also swam a 58.94 breaststroke split on USC's second place 400 Medley relay.  Next up, Rebecca will represent the United States in the World Championships in Shanghai, China April 5-9.     

The men's NCAA Championships concluded this week and two Scarlet swimmers were part of their teams' scoring. Stefan Hirniak, representing the University of Virginia, finished 11th in the 200 Fly (1:45.54) and was part of Virginia's 800 Free relay which placed 13th.  Bobby Savulich, representing the University of Michigan, anchored Michigan's 400 Free relay which finished 9th.  For all the results check the links below.

Junior Olympics

Scarlet had a great weekend at the NJ Junior Olympics.  In the meet there were 9 team records broken, one new summer junior national cut, one new US Open cut, three new spring junior national cuts, 10 new sectional cuts and 226 new best times.  Highlights are below:

Team records - Kevin Jan broke team records in the 11-12 boys 50 Fly (26.88) and 100 Fly (1:00.83), Dylan McDermott broke five 11-12 boys records in the 400 IM (4:50.64), 1650 Free (18:13.89), 1000 Free (10:59.13 - 1650 split!), 200 Fly (2:17.63), and 200 Back (2:17.73), and Taylor Wiedecker broke the 10 & under 500 Free record (6:01.33).  The 11-12 boys 200 Free relay of Kevin Jan, Drew Newsome, JonErik Gulliksen, and Dylan McDermott smashed the record they set at Holiday Classic by almost four seconds with a time of 1:45.61.  The total for the short course season is now 21 new team records!  

Summer Junior Nationals/US Open - Ashley Steenvoorden swam to both a summer junior national cut and a US Open cut in the 500 Free with a time of 4:55.15.

Spring Junior Nationals - Ali Christie achieved her first spring junior national cut in the 400 IM (4:32.15) as did Alexa Hetzel in the 200 Free (1:53.02), and Kristen Steenvoorden achieved her 7th junior cut in the 500 Free (5:01.82). 

Sectionals - James Capparell swam to a sectional cut in the 200 Back (1:57.89), as did Veronica Feltrin in the 200 IM (2:11.74), Tara Henn in the 200 Fly (2:11.38- first time qualifier!), Andrew King in the 50 Free (22.41), Tom Medvecky in the 1650 Free (16:25.88), Joanna Pogogeff in the 500 Free (5:12.07), Holly Rebovich in the 200 Free (1:57.34), and Austin Steel in the 200 Free (1:45.34) and 500 Free (4:45.15), and 1650 Free (16:33.24).  

Dylan McDermott finished second in the 11-12 boys high point while Kevin Jan finished 10th and Holly Rebovich finished 6th in the 13-14 girls high point.

Sectionals

Twenty two Scarlet swimmers competed at Harvard University this past weekend at the Speedo Sectional Championships.  In the meet two new team records and two new US National cuts were achieved.  Highlights are below:

Ashley Steenvoorden won her first Sectional title in the 1650 freestyle.  Ashley achieved two national cuts with the swim - her time of 16:41.80 was a national cut as was her 1000 split (10:04.91).   The swim also broke the 15-19 and Open team records in the event. She also finished 14th in the 1000 free and 20th in the 500 Free (5:01.01).  

Kristen Steenvoorden finished 9th in the 1650 (17:19.43) and 12th in the 1000 (10:23.38).

Darren Ankosko finished 4th in the 1000 free (9:32.35), 9th in the 500 free (4:37.98), and 12th in the 1650 (16:16.69).

James Capparell finished 12th in the 1000 free (9:40.77) and 13th in the 500 free (4:40.67).

Missy Lang finished 10th in the 200 breast (2:20.20), 17th in the 100 breast (1:05.32), and 21st in the 400 IM (4:31.32).

Brian Sharkey finished 3rd in the 50 free (20.99) and 5th in the 100 back (51.76).  

Ali Christie finished 19th in the 1650 free (17:30.99) and 24th in the 1000 free (10:31.51).

Veronica Feltrin finished 24th in the 1650 free (17:34.71).

Mike Pietrusinski finished 24th in the 200 back (1:56.33).

The men's 800 Free relay (Darren Ankosko, Brian Sharkey, James Capparell, and Austin Steel) finished 2nd (6:56.24) and the same four finished 9th in the 400 Free relay (3:13.96).

The women's 800 free relay (Alexa Hetzel, Ashley Steenvoorden, Veronica Feltrin, and Kristen Steenvoorden) finished 9th (7:38.39).

More Meet Results

This past weekend had SAC swimmers swimming in the Burgdorff Invitational, the Distance Meet at Montclair, and the Mini Meet at Ramapo College.  Results are now posted.  

In the Burgdoff meet there were several new meet cuts achieved:

Renae Sharkey swam to her first spring junior national cut in the 200 back (2:25.22).

Tom Medvecky notched his fourth sectional cut in the 100 Free (55.62).

Five swimmers achieved zone times for events in their age group this summer - Chris Cipolla in the 13-14 200 Breast (2:51.23), Ashley Corley in the 10 and under 50 Breast (44.47), Bernadette D'Alonzo in the 13-14 100 Breast (1:22.31), Kevin Jan in the 11-12 50 Fly (31.96) and 100 Fly (1:13.66), and Brigitte Malivert in the 13-14 100 Breast (1:24.80).

Winterfest

Thanks to all of our parents who worked at the annual Winterfest meet this past weekend.  The meet was extremely large and our parents did their usual fantastic job of making the meet run smoothly.  The long hard weekend required working several hours per day and made the meet one of our most successful ever and showed why we are one of the top clubs in the country.  

In the pool, there were many outstanding performances by SAC swimmers.  There were three team records broken in the meet, three new sectional times and one new spring junior national time.  The highlights are listed below:

Team records - Kevin Jan broke the team record in the boys 11-12 50 Fly (28.33), and Dylan McDermott broke records in the boys 11-12 200 Fly (2:19.21) and 1650 Free (18:37.38).

Spring Juniors - Kristen Steenvoorden achieved her sixth spring junior national cut in the 1650 Free (17:10.58).

Sectionals - Tom Medvecky achieved his third sectional cut in the 200 fly (1:57.69), and Holly Rebovich achieved her second and third sectional cuts in the same race - the 1650 Free (17:50.58).  Holly's 1000 split in the mile qualified as well (10:38.51).

Congratulations to everyone on a great meet in and out of the pool!

Holiday Classic

Scarlet swimmers had a great weekend at the Holiday Classic meet.  Scarlet won the overall and women's team championships and had numerous outstanding individual performances.

State Record - Missy Lang broke the 13-14 New Jersey State record in the 200 Breast (formerly held by SAC's Rebecca Soni) with a time of 2:17.08.  The time also broke the team and meet records held by Rebecca.

Team Records - There were 6 team records broken in the meet.  In addition to breaking the 200 Breast record, Missy Lang broke the 13-14 200 IM record as well (2:08.50).  Dylan McDermott broke the 11-12 200 Fly (2:19.37), 100 Fly (1:03.29), and 400 IM (4:53.53) records and Simone Christen broke the 11-12 200 Fly record (2:19.10).

US Open - Ashley Steenvoorden achieved her first US Open cut in the 1650 Free (16:57.32).

Spring Junior Nationals - Kristen Steenvoorden achieved a spring Junior cut in the 1000 Free (10:14.06), and Ashley Steenvoorden got the 500 Free cut (5:03.16). 

Sectionals - There were 15 new Sectional times achieved in the meet with two swimmers, Austin Steel (1000 Free - 9:59.61, 200 Back - 1:59.32) and Joanna Pogogeff (100 Free - 54.09) achieving cuts for the first time.  In addition the following swimmers achieved additional sectional cuts - Allie Christie (100 Fly - 1:00.06, 1650 Free - 17:54.14), Veronica Feltrin (500 Free - 5:10.11, 1650 Free - 17:43.15), Alexa Hetzel (1000 Free - 10:38.03), Andrew King (100 Breast - 1:01.80), Missy Lang (200 Free - 1:56.43, 100 Free - 54.52), Maegan McLaughlin (100 Breast - 1:08.34), Tom Medvecky (1000 Free - 9:57.96, 500 Free - 4:46.22), Holly Rebovich (500 Free - 5:09.57), Kristen Steenvoorden (200 Free 1:56.78).

Spring Nationals - The women's 400 Free relay team of Kristina Helmers (54.55), Joanna Pogogeff (53.70), Ashley Steenvoorden (53.36), and Veronica Feltrin (53.26) achieved a Spring National cut with a time of 3:34.87.

Scarlet at World Championships

Congratulations to Rebecca Soni and Stefan Hirniak for being invited to represent the United States at the 2006 Short Course World Championships April 5-9 in Shanghai, China.  Both were selected as a result of their performances last summer during the US National Championships.  Rebecca will be attending the meet, while Stefan was unable to accept the invitation.  This will be Rebecca's second international meet representing the USAClick here for the complete team lists.

Sonny Werblin Invite

Congratulations to all swimmers who participated in the meet this past weekend.  There were four new sectional times achieved in the meet.  Holly Rebovich was a first time sectional qualifier in the 1650 with a summer sectional cut of 18:05.98, Ashley Steenvoorden added the 500 Free (5:06.58), Kristen Steenvoorden also added the 500 Free (5:08.55), and Darren Ankosko added the 50 Free (22.43).  Great early season swimming!

Scholastic All America

USA Swimming has announced the 2004-2005 Scholastic All America Team.  The Scholastic All-America Team is comprised of high school student-athletes, who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and have competed in an individual event in the 2004 ConocoPhillips Summer Nationals, 2004 Summer Speedo Championship Series (sectionals), 2004 U.S. Open, 2005 World and World University Games Trials, 2005 Speedo Championship Series (sectionals), 2004 National Disability Championships and 2004 Open Water National Championships.  

This year, Scarlet had five swimmers achieve this honor.  Congratulations to Kristina Helmers (2nd consecutive year), Monica McKinnon, Lovette Leonhard, Katie Morrison, and Leighanne Tillman for their academic and athletic success.

National Teams Named

Congratulations to Rebecca Soni for being named to the USA Swimming National "A" TeamNational A Team members are those swimmers who have achieved a top-eight FINA world ranking in individual Olympic events during the traditional long course season, Jan. 1-Sept. 1, 2005.  Rebecca finished the year ranked third in the World in the 200 Breast.  She also finished with World rankings of 16th in the 100 Breast and 32nd in the 50 Breast.

World University Games

Third WUG Medal for Rebecca Soni!!- After coming in to the finals as the top seed in the 100 Breast, Rebecca captured the Silver Medal (1:08.77) in the final as the United States went 1-2 in the event with 2000 Olympic Gold Medallist Megan Jendrick winning the gold.  Like the 200 Breast, the USA had not won a medal in this event at the WUG since 1999!  The medal is Rebecca's third of the Games and the swim broke the 15-18 and Open SAC and NJ State records.  For Reb's reaction to her AM swim click here.    

SAC Gold Medalist!! - Rebecca Soni won a Gold Medal as part of the 400 medley relay at the World University Games today.  Reb swam the breaststroke leg in the prelims to help the United States make finals, and the team went on to win gold at night.  She swims her final event of the meet, the 100 Breast, tomorrow.    

Congratualtions to Rebecca  for winning the Silver Medal at the World University Games in the 200 Breast!!  After finishing fourth in the prelims this morning Rebecca finished second in the finals (2:27.84) and finished ahead of last year's world record holder from China.  The United States has not won a medal in this event at the WUG since 1999!  For Rebecca's reaction to her Silver Medal swim click here.  For Rebecca's reaction to her AM swim and other AM results click here.

US Nationals

The Scarlet National Team had a great week of swimming at the National Championships in Irvine, CA.  Scarlet finished as the 6th overall 18 and under team in the meet and the team finished 16th overall in the combined team rankings with the women finishing 21st and the men finishing 23rd.  SAC swimmers broke 7 team records and 4 New Jersey State records during the meet.  There were several world class and breakthrough swims at the meet:

While swimming unrested through this meet in preparation for the World University Games, Rebecca Soni established herself as the top female 200 Breaststroker in the country defeating four Olympians and winning her first National Championship and her second consecutive 18 and under National Championship. Reb's time of 2:26.27 is the fastest by an American woman this year is the third fastest time in the world this year, and is the fastest swim by an 18 and under swimmer in the world this year.  That swim ranks her as the fifth fastest American woman in history and the 21st fastest woman in World history.  Her swim also broke the 15-18 and Open SAC and NJ State records.

Rebecca also finished 6th in the 100 Breast with a time of (1:09.80).

Stefan Hirniak emerged as one of the top butterfliers in the world with a stunning second place finish in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:58.15.  This time is the 18th fastest time in the world this year, the third fastest time by an American this year and ranks Stefan as the 11th fastest man in American historyStefan is also a Canadian citizen (dual citizenship with the USA), and his swim broke the Canadian national record in the event.   Stefan also broke the Open SAC and NJ State records with the swim.

In addition to the 200 Fly, Stefan finished 18th in the 400 free (3:57.40) - new Open SAC record, and 27th in the 200 free (1:52.05).

Bobby Savulich established a new 15-18 NJ State as well as 15-18 and Open SAC records in the 200 Free.  Bobby finished 9th overall with a time of (1:50.23).

Bobby also swam the 400 Free (44th -4:03.23), 100 free (46th - 51.71), and 200 IM (65th - 2:13.13).

Darren Ankosko finished 57th (8:31.19) in the 800 Free.

Kristen Harris finished 45th in the 200 Back (2:20.95), and 60th in the 100 Back (1:07.31).

In the relays, the men's 800 free relay of Stefan Hirniak, Bobby Savulich, Darren Ankosko, and James Capparell finished 14th in the country with a new SAC open record time of 7:43.43.

The women's 400 medley relay of Meghan Capparell, Missy Lang, Kristina Helmers, and Kristen Harris finished 36th (4:29.60).

Eastern Zones

Eleven Scarlet swimmers represented New Jersey in the Eastern Zone meet in Buffalo, NY last week.  Austin Steel, Jenn Pflug, Ryan Terraciano, Holly Rebovich, Jen Boyle, Alysia Tsui, Dylan McDermott,  Bernadette D'Alonzo, Stephanie and Kristine Ng, and Maureen McKenna all swam in the meet for NJ.  In addition, Shannon McKenna swam in the Open Water race after the Zone meet. 

In all SAC swimmers broke 2 team records and achieved 21 new best times at the meet.  Top 16 finishers were:

Austin Steel broke two 13-14 team records - one in the 200 Back (2:18.22) where he finished 6th, and one in the 100 Back (1:05.18) where he finished 7th.  Additionally, Austin finished 8th in the 800 Free (9:16.03), 8th in the 200 Free (2:06.33), 10th in the 400 Free (4:29.41), and 7th in the 1500 Free (17:51.52).  

Holly Rebovich finished 12th in the 13-14 800 Free (9:45.81), and 14th in the 1500 Free (18:58.74).

Maureen McKenna finished 15th in the 11-12 50 Free (30.04).

Dylan McDermott finished 16th in the 11-12 400 free (4:56.18).

Junior Nationals

Missy Lang was in Irvine, Ca representing SAC in the very competitive USA Swimming Junior National Championships last week.  Missy swam the 200 Breast where she finished 51st (2:49.59), and the 100 Breast where she finished 56th (1:16.98).

Junior Olympics

Scarlet swimmers had a great weekend at the NJ Junior Olympics.  Our parents ran a wonderful meet under tough conditions as the meet went past 10 PM all three nights, and their work helped the swimmers perform well on all three days of the meet.  During the meet SAC swimmers broke 4 team records, achieved 14 new Sectional cuts and 240 new best times.  Highlights were:

Team records were broken by Austin Steel in the 13-14 200 Back (2:19.16) and 100 back (1:06.14), Ashley Steenvoorden in the 13-14 800 Free (9:16.24), and the 13-14 Girls 800 free relay of Ashley Steenvoorden, Jenn Pflug, Holly Rebovich, and Kristen Steenvoorden (9:10.00).

New sectional times were achieved by James Capparell in the 400 IM (4:52.23), and 400 Free (4:14.68), Veronica Feltrin in the 200 Free (2:09.45), and 400 IM (5:20.30), Ashley Gagnon in the 200 Free (2:12.66),  400 IM (5:20.65), and 400 Free (4:37.90), Alexa Hetzel in the 200 Free (2:10.37), 200 IM (2:28.83), 400 IM (5:16.26), and 400 Free (4:35.87), Andrew King in the 100 Breast (1:11.45), Maegan McLaughlin in the 200 Breast (2:49.28), and Nick Petrelis was a first time sectional qualifier in the 200 Breast (2:38.83).

SUPER SECTIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!!

Congratulations to the Scarlet Sectional Team for winning the 2005 Summer Super Sectional Meet

Scarlet beat over 140 teams entered in the meet to capture our second Sectional Championship in the last four years.  Scarlet also won the Men's Team Championship.  During the meet our swimmers broke two meet records and six team records. Highlights were:

Bobby Savulich won the men's high point award with 6 individual top eight finishes, won two events, the 200 Free (1:52.49) and 200 IM (2:09.48), and broke the team records in the 15-19 and Open 50 Free (24.27 - 5th place).  Bobby finished 2nd in the 400 Free (4:02.57), and 100 Free (52.29), and 6th in the 800 Free (8:31.54)

Rebecca Soni won two events, the 100 (1:11.04 - meet record) and 200 (2:32.35) Breaststrokes, broke the team records in the 15-19 and Open 200 IM (2:22.23 - 9th place), and was 15th in the 400 IM (5:02.51).

Stefan Hirniak finished third in the men's high point with 5 top eight finishes in his five individual events. He was 3rd in the 200 Free (1:54.79) and 200 Fly (2:05.58), 4th in the 100 Fly (56.88), 7th in the 400 Free (4:09.10), and 8th in the 100 Free (53.14).

Darren Ankosko had four individual top 16 finishes.  He was 3rd in the 800 Free (8:28.92), 4th in the 400 Free (4:09.24), and 13th in the 200 Free (1:57.59) and 1500 (16:36.33).

Kristina Helmers had two individual top 16 finishes in the 200 Free (15th- 2:09.89), and 100 Free (14th - 1:00.46).

Melissa Lang finished 12th in the 100 Breast  (1:15.46).

Ashley Steenvoorden finished 16th in the 1500 (17:48.95).

Relays

The men's 800 Free Relay (Bobby Savulich, Stefan Hirniak, Darren Ankosko, James Capparell) finished first and broke the meet and Open team records (7:49.67), the 400 Free Relay (Bobby Savulich, Stefan Hirniak, Darren Ankosko, Brian Sharkey) broke the Open team record and finished 2nd (3:35.21), and the 400 Medley Relay (Brian Sharkey, Andrew King, Stefan Hirniak, Bobby Savulich) finished 2nd (4:00.64).

The Women's 400 Medley relays finished 3rd  (Meghan Capparell, Rebecca Soni, Kristina Helmers, Veronica Feltrin - 4:25.59), and 9th (Renae Sharkey, Melissa Lang, Kristen Steenvoorden, Ashley Steenvoorden - 4:32.63), the 400 Free relays finished 9th (Kristina Helmers, Veronica Feltrin, Meghan Capparell, Ashley Steenvoorden -  4:03.86),  and 15th (Katie Morrison, Renae Sharkey, Missy Helmers, Kristen Steenvoorden -  4:07.12), and the 800 Free Relay finished 7th (Katie Morrison, Kristina Helmers, Meghan Capparell, Ashley Steenvoorden - 8:47.57).

Scarlet Named Silver Medal Club for Second Year in a Row!

For the second year in a row, Scarlet has been recognized by USA Swimming as a Silver Medal Club in the USA Swimming Club Excellence Program.  The USA Swimming Club Excellence Program is a voluntary program that identifies and recognizes USA Swimming clubs for their commitment to excellence in operation, performance, and the support and development of USA Swimming. This program strives to meet the following objectives:

  • Promote the development of comprehensive age group and senior swimming programs.
  • Provide ways that USA Swimming can better assist, encourage, and motivate our member clubs to strive for the highest ideals of development and performance.
  • Encourage USA Swimming’s most successful professional coaches to become leaders in the sport through involvement in local or national governance.

The program’s goal is to embrace leadership and excellence in USA Swimming’s top member clubs. Summer Sizzle

Our swimmers had a fine weekend at the Summer Sizzle meet in the middle of heavy summer training.  There were five team records broken as well as five meet records set by Scarlet swimmers.  There was also one first time Sectional qualifierAndrew King qualified for Sectionals in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:38.28.  Team records were broken by Kevin Jan in the 11-12 200 Fly (2:49.92), Dylan McDermott in the 11-12 400 IM (5:41.88), Austin Steel in the 13-14 200 Back (2:19.97), Kristen Steenvoorden in the 13-14 400 IM (5:06.85), and Alysia Tsui in the 11-12 200 Fly (2:41.50).  

Meet records were set by Rebecca Soni in the 15 and over 100 Breast (1:12.82), Bobby Savulich in the 15 and over 100 Free (52.62), and 200 Free (1:52.89), Kristen Harris, Rebecca Soni, Meghan Capparell, and Kristina Helmers in the 400 Medley Relay  (4:28.92), and Bobby Savulich, Stefan Hirniak, Darren Ankosko, and James Capparell in the 800 Free Relay (8:03.22).

A week before, in the Meet of Xcellence, Dylan McDermott broke the team record in the 11-12 800 free with a time of 10:09.18.

USA Swimming National Team

Congratulations to Rebecca Soni for being named to the 2004-2005 USA Swimming National "B" Team.  Swimmers must be ranked in the Top 16 in the World in the final year end rankings to qualify for the National B Team.  Rebecca's performance at the World Championship Trials put her 12th in the World in the final 2004-2005 rankings in the 200 Breast.  She is currently ranked 7th in the World in the 200 Breast and 13th in the World in the 100 Breast.

Heat Madness

Thanks to all the parents who helped make our Heat Madness meet a huge success.  Their hard work made the meet run smoothly and allowed the swimmers to have a great time and swim fast.  SAC swimmers achieved 124 new best times in the one day meet.  Congratulations!

Memorial Day Meet

Congratulations to Austin Steel for breaking the team record in the 13-14 200 Back (2:22.46) at the Memorial Day meet.  Austin has broken two other team records this year as well which have not been recognized.  At the Burgdorff Invitational in January, he broke the team record in the 13-14 100 meter Back (1:06.83), and at the New Jersey Junior Olympics he broke the 100 yard Back record with a time of 58.85.   Austin's records bring the team total for the year to 41!!  Congratulations!!

Stanford University Grand Prix

Scarlet swimmers were outstanding at the first meet of the US Grand Prix series at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.  SAC swimmers compiled 35 new best times, one Stanford University pool record, one new Olympic Trial cut, and four team records during the three day meet.  Highlights were: 

Rebecca Soni won the 200 Breast (2:29.32 - Stanford University pool record), was 2nd in the 100 Breast (1:11.04), 2nd in the 400 IM (4:54.46 - new 15-19 team record, new Olympic Trial cut), 7th in the 200 IM (2:22.40 - new 15-19 and Open team records), and 20th in the 100 Fly (1:06.33).

Kristen Steenvoorden was 7th in the 400 IM (5:08.59 - new 13-14 team record), 10th in the 200 Breast (2:44.57), 15th in the 200 IM (2:26.78), and 21st in the 100 Breast (1:19.07).

Kristina Helmers was 10th in the 400 IM (5:08.70),  21st in the 200 IM (2:27.04), 21st in the 200 Free (2:11.02), and 24th in the 100 Free (1:00.99).

Darren Ankosko was 12th in the 1500 Free (16:37.71), 14th in the 400 Free (4:12.40), 14th in the 400 IM (4:49.71), and 15th in the 200 Free (1:59.15).

Meghan Capparell was 12th in the 200 Back (2:26.03), and 14th in the 100 Back (1:08.96).

Ashley Steenvoorden was 21st in the 800 Free (9:31.36).

Katie Morrison was 22nd in the 800 Free (9:32.46).

Congratulations to the following Scarlet seniors who have decided where they will be attending school next fall:                 Tim Gusick has accepted an athletic scholarship and will be attending Fordham University, Katie Morrison will be attending Dartmouth College, Megan Livak will be attending Lafayette College, Alyssa Barberio will be attending the University of Maryland, Kristi Patane will be attending Kutztown University, Kerri Adams will be attending Hartwick College, and Sarah Magaziner will be attending the University of Vermont.
