Scarlet Happenings

A lot has been happening here at Scarlet, and this summer promises to be the most exciting one in our history.  To catch up - as reported earlier, Scarlet had another swimmer qualify for the Olympic Trials which will begin June 29 in Omaha, Nebraska.  Ashley Steenvoorden swam to the 800 Free cut out in Santa Clara, CA with a time a 8:49.25.  To see a video of Ashley's swim click here (Ashley is in Lane 6 - Lane 1 is at the top).  Her swim also broke the 15-19 and Open team records in the event Ashley has recently returned from the National Open Water Select Camp in Fort Myers, FL where she was one of twelve women invited.  Invites were sent to the top 12 swimmers in the USA in the 1500 free.  Ashley is currently ranked 34th in the world in this event.  This is her first time in the World Top 50 and she is the fourth Scarlet swimmer since 2004 to be ranked this high.

Later this week, Dylan McDermott will be heading to Buffalo for the Eastern Zone Select Camp. Dylan is one of 28 male athletes to be selected for the camp which is for the Zone's top 13-14 year olds.  Recently Head Coach Tom Speedling returned from Oxford, OH where he was the Head Coach for the Central Zone Select Camp.   In other exciting news for Scarlet, Tom was also named to the United States staff of the World Youth Championships Team.  After the Olympic Trials are complete, Tom will head to Monterrey, Mexico with Team USA for the meet which will run until July 13.

The long course season is underway and the last few weeks have seen some fast early season swimming from Scarlet swimmers.  Recent meets have included the Memorial Day meet and our Heat Madness meet which was again a great success due to the hard work of our parents.  Thanks to everyone who helped out on another long day and special thanks to the people who stayed around through all of the usual weather delays.  At the Heat Madness meet, Eric Stobbe broke two 11-12 boys team records in the 200 free (2:13.05) and 50 back (32.13).  In addition, there were many new Eastern Zone times achieved over the course of the two weekends -congratulations to the swimmers below who achieved this!

Calling all officials

Parents - have you considered becoming an official??  The benefits include free entry into meets, avoiding fighting for seats in the stands, and being close to the action during meets.  Officiating also counts toward your family's timing at meets Scarlet does not host.  We hope parents of swimmers of all ages will become officials, but there is a dire need in New Jersey for parents of 12 and under swimmers to officiate, as many teams are having difficulty hosting meets due to the shortage.  If you would like more information on how to become an official contact Jill Christen at jcchristen@patmedia.net
