Update

NCAA Championships

Scarlet alumni were outstanding at the 2009 men's and women's NCAA Championships.  In continuing our tradition of excellence here and on into college, our club had more swimmers at the two meets than any other club in New Jersey,  with three swimmers in the women's meet, and two in the men's meet.  Our swimmers did not only qualify for the meet, they ended the college season with four being named NCAA All Americans - two were first team All Americans (top eight finishers), and two were second team (finished 9th - 16th).

Rebecca Soni (Southern Cal) led the way winning the 100 and 200 breaststrokes breaking the NCAA meet record in both with a time of 58.36 in the 100 and 2:05.48 in the 200.  Reb also swam on USC's third place 400 medley relay and the 13th place 200 medley relay.  Rebecca's victory in the 200 was the fourth year in a row she has won the event - a feat accomplished by only ten other swimmers in NCAA history.  She is the only one to ever win the 200 breast four years in a row.

Ashley Steenvoorden (Minnesota) swam the 500 free, and 1650 free - finishing 9th in the 1650 with a time of 16:02.57 to achieve All American status.

Kristen Steenvoorden (Minnesota) swam the 500 free and 400 IM.

In the men's meet, Bobby Savulich (Michigan) was a member of three top eight finishing relays - the 400 free relay (6th), the 200 medley relay (7th), and the 400 medley relay (8th), and also swam on the 11th place 200 free relay.

Darren Ankosko (Virginia) swam to a 15th place finish in the 500 free (swam a 4:15.95 morning swim to qualify for his All American status).  Darren also swam the 1650 free at the meet.

Congratulations to all of our alumni for another great season!

Melanie Leonhard - recovering from a recent bout with mono - swam to a new junior cut in the 1650 free (17:17.82), and a new sectional cut in the 200 free (1:55.75).  Melanie also finished 10th in the 1000 free (10:15.79), and 12th in the 500 free (4:59.05).

Christie Clarke, in her first sectional meet, swam to a new spring junior cut in the 200 free (1:53.95), and a new sectional cut in the 200 back (2:10.23).  Christie also finished 16th in the 500 free (5:00.46).

TYR Winterfest

Thank you to all of the parents who worked this past weekend to make the TYR Winterfest meet as big and successful as it was.  All of the volunteers from the timers, computer operators and everyone else including the famous hospitality helped the meet again be a huge success.

Thanks also to the SAC officials and to the officials from other clubs who volunteered their time.  Some New Jersey meets suffer from a lack of officials, but our meet had so many officials volunteer that there were not enough positions available for all of them to work in some sessions.  Your time is much appreciated.

The meet was also a success in the pool as Scarlet swimmers swam to 365 new best times and 16 swimmers added 21 new JO times.  The swimmers who added JO times were:

Nick Riepe                        Jasmine Lee

Meet Results Update

The last few weeks have been filled with exciting meets and fast swimming.  The whirlwind has slowed somewhat but picks up again this weekend with the Scarlet hosted JO meet and then it's on to the US Open, Junior National Championships, and Eastern Zones.  In the meantime, check out the results of the last few weeks below.

Summer Sizzle

Scarlet won the team championship for the fourth consecutive year, nearly doubling the point score of the closest NJ competitor.  Most of our swimmers in the meet were in the midst of heavy training, but that did not prevent us from having many outstanding swims.  During the meet Scarlet swimmers swam to one New Jersey State Record, seven new team records (all by one swimmer!), and one new spring junior national cut.  In addition five 12 and under swimmers swam to new zone cuts.

Eric Stobbe had a great meet as he broke the NJ State record in the 11-12 boys 200 backstroke by six seconds with a time of 2:21.06.  The time ranks him number three in the country in his age group and was one of seven new team records he set in the meet.  Others records were set in the 100 Free (1:01.34), 100 Back (1:07.31), 400 Free (4:33.84), 50 Back (31.82), 200 Fly (2:27.33), and 200 Free (2:09.83).

Kristine Ng got her first spring junior national cut in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:44.53.

Swimmers who achieved new zone cuts in the meet were Joanna Han, Ashley Corley, Julien Zhu, Justin Torres, and Nick Riepe.

Eastern USA Conference Championship

Scarlet is one of the founding members of the newly formed Eastern USA Conference.  The members of the conference are teams that are interested in excellence and high level swimming and wish to compete with teams who share the idea that achievement at the highest levels of the sport is the ultimate goal of the club.

At the inaugural conference championship Scarlet finished second overall in the team race.  In the meet, Scarlet swimmers set one New Jersey State Record, four team records, achieved two new summer junior national cuts, two spring junior national cuts, and two new sectional cuts.

Chris Cipolla swam to a new summer junior national cut in the 200 Breast (2:27.32) and a new spring junior national cut in the 1500 Free (16:37.33).

Austin Steel swam to a new summer junior cut in the 200 IM (2:11.12).

Melanie Leonhard swam to a new spring junior cut in the 800 Free (9:13.86).

New sectional cuts went to Missy Lang (100 Fly - 1:06.76), and Maegan McLaughlin (200 IM - 2:27.55).

Eric Stobbe broke his second NJ State record since joining Scarlet, this time in the 11-12 100 Back.  His time of 1:05.98 broke a 15 year old state record and ranks him third in the country in the event. The 100 back was one of three team records Eric set in the meet.  The others were in the 200 Fly (2:26.22), and 400 Free (4:31.73).

Kevin Jan also broke a team record in the 13-14 boys 100 Fly with a time of 1:02.20.

Silvers

There were many strong swims and thirteen swimmers achieved new JO cuts during the two weekends of Silvers.

New JO times went to -

Elias Mloukhiyeh                    Joanna Han

Nick Riepe                              Julianne Torres

Jasmine Lee                           Dan Gayetsky

Dan Zinoviev                           Kyle Terracciano

Amalan Krishnamoorthy         Kenisha Liu

Scarlet Happenings

A lot has been happening here at Scarlet, and this summer promises to be the most exciting one in our history.  To catch up - as reported earlier, Scarlet had another swimmer qualify for the Olympic Trials which will begin June 29 in Omaha, Nebraska.  Ashley Steenvoorden swam to the 800 Free cut out in Santa Clara, CA with a time a 8:49.25.  To see a video of Ashley's swim click here (Ashley is in Lane 6 - Lane 1 is at the top).  Her swim also broke the 15-19 and Open team records in the event Ashley has recently returned from the National Open Water Select Camp in Fort Myers, FL where she was one of twelve women invited.  Invites were sent to the top 12 swimmers in the USA in the 1500 free.  Ashley is currently ranked 34th in the world in this event.  This is her first time in the World Top 50 and she is the fourth Scarlet swimmer since 2004 to be ranked this high.

Later this week, Dylan McDermott will be heading to Buffalo for the Eastern Zone Select Camp. Dylan is one of 28 male athletes to be selected for the camp which is for the Zone's top 13-14 year olds.  Recently Head Coach Tom Speedling returned from Oxford, OH where he was the Head Coach for the Central Zone Select Camp.   In other exciting news for Scarlet, Tom was also named to the United States staff of the World Youth Championships Team.  After the Olympic Trials are complete, Tom will head to Monterrey, Mexico with Team USA for the meet which will run until July 13.

The long course season is underway and the last few weeks have seen some fast early season swimming from Scarlet swimmers.  Recent meets have included the Memorial Day meet and our Heat Madness meet which was again a great success due to the hard work of our parents.  Thanks to everyone who helped out on another long day and special thanks to the people who stayed around through all of the usual weather delays.  At the Heat Madness meet, Eric Stobbe broke two 11-12 boys team records in the 200 free (2:13.05) and 50 back (32.13).  In addition, there were many new Eastern Zone times achieved over the course of the two weekends -congratulations to the swimmers below who achieved this!
