Alumni Update
One of the ways to measure the success of our mission statement is to see if we are producing athletes and people that go on to be successful after leaving Scarlet. Our alumni are proving that not only is our team getting better, but we are getting better and better every year at fulfilling our mission statement. The alumni page is being updated over the next few weeks to encompass as many of our former swimmers as we can. The list of schools they attended and swam at should have every current SAC swimmer excited for their own future.
Before we get to the swimming, there was some great news on the academic front as former Scarlet swimmer Monica McKinnon announced that she has been accepted into Harvard Law School. Congratulations Monica! Good luck!
There were many alumni in action over the past few weeks of the college conference championships and there were too many outstanding performances to go over them all. A few snapshots of the highlights are below -
Scarlet had eight former swimmers at the Big Ten Championships. Ashley and Kristen Steenvoorden led Minnesota to the Women's Big Ten Conference Championship with several outstanding swims. Ashley was named First Team All Big Ten as she won the 500 Free in 4:38.00, was 8th in the 200 free (1:47.62) and second in the mile (16:06.96). Ashley will be one of the favorites in the 500 free and the mile at the women's NCAA Championship meet March 13-15 in Auburn, AL.
Kristen finished 6th in the 500 (4:42.77), 10th in the 400IM (4:41.56), and 9th in the mile (16:20.07).
Melissa Lang, swimming for Michigan, was 18th in the 100 breast (1:02.91), and 20th in the 200 breast (2:15.79).
On the men's side, Nick Ankosko and Chris Cipolla were a big part of Penn State's meet with several outstanding swims. Nick, a freshman, finished 7th in the mile in 15:05.32 and was 17th in the 500 free (4:20.99). We are now waiting to see if Nick made the NCAA Championship meet as his mile time is one of the top in the country.
Chris swam to a 14th place finish in the 400IM with a time of 3:51.57, and was 12th in the 200 breast in 1:59.74.
Freshman Alex Galinskiy, swimming for Drexel University, was the Colonial Athletic Association Champion in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.96. Alex also finished 11th in the 100 free with a time of 45.72.
At the women's Ivy League Championships Bernadette D'Alonzo of UPenn was 24th in the 100 free (53.02 - Bernadette went a 51.99 to win a swim off for 24th earlier!) and Erin Henn of Dartmouth was 18th in the 1000 free with a time of 10:23.92.
Great job to all of our alumni who represented their schools and our club with their usual toughness and success!

Scarlet Finishes Long Course Season With a Bang!
Scarlet's mission is to provide an environment that fosters National and International success for our swimmers. The summer of 2011 proved that we are fulfilling that mission statement as well as we ever have, as our swimmers competed all over the world in every major international competition. The results highlighted below from our alumni have been outstanding at the World Championships in Shanghai, China where our former swimmers (Rebecca Soni, Stefan Hirniak) won four medals - three gold and one bronze and had a swimmer on the 400 medley relay that set a new American Record, the World University Games in Shenzhen, China (Bobby Savulich) - one Gold and one Silver Medal, and October's Pan American Games where Ashley Steenvoorden and Bobby Savulich will compete for Team USA.
Back at home we had six swimmers represent Scarlet at the National Championships and five swimmers at the Junior National Championships. Those two meets produced three team records, one new super sectional cut, and 13 new best times.
The Scarlet hosted New Jersey Junior Olympic meet was a tremendous success due to the hard work of the parents who made this four day trials/finals meet run like clockwork. The amount of preparation and work that went into this was extraordinary. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a great experience. In the pool, the swimmers were equally great, swimming to one new Olympic Trial cut, three new junior national cuts, seven new super sectional cuts, six new team records, and 194 new best times.

The 15-19 boys 400 medley relay record went down as well as Eric Stobbe, Chris Cipolla, Alex Galinskiy, and Nick Ankosko smashed it by nearly 5 seconds with a time of 3:59.43.

Long Course Results
The long course championship season is here, and the season has been another great one for our swimmers to date. It is exciting for several reasons as we have swimmers attending many different meets throughout the country, and we are now in an exciting new partnership with the Rutgers women's team and their staff. Below are some results to catch up on before we start our drive to the end of the season. Working backward from last weekend -
Southern Zone Sectionals
Twenty nine Scarlet swimmers made the trip down to Gainesville, FL for the southern zone sectional meet. When the weekend was over, the team had finished ninth overall out of 44 teams and had achieved one senior national cut, four junior national cuts, three super sectional cuts, six team records, and 77 new best times. Highlights are below -
Nick Ankosko swam to his first senior national cut in the 800 free with a time of 8:20.14 - the sixth fastest time in the country for his age group. Nick also swam to a top 10 time with a 4:02.08 in the 400 free the 10th fastest time in the country.
Junior National times went to Christie Clarke in the 1500 (17:19.15 - 11th fastest time in the country), Alex Galinskiy in the 200 free ( 1:55.20) and Eric Stobbe in the 100 back (59.85 - ninth fastest in the country and a 15-19 team record) and 800 free (8:31.36 - 10th fastest time in the country). Eric also swam to the 13th fastest time in the country in the 200 back (2:09.93 - new 15-19 team record).
New super sectional times went to Bernadette D'Alonzo in the 1500 (17:52.96), Nick Riepe also in the 1500 (17:02.19), and Kevin Wang in the 400 free (4:11.02).
In addition to Eric's two records above, Mary Moser broke the 15-19 and open 100 fly record with a time of 1:03.12, and the boys 200 medley relay of Eric Stobbe, Scott Huang, Alex Galinskiy, and Nick Ankosko broke the 15-19 and open team records with a time of 1:53.90.
Summer Sizzle - 7 in a row!!!
Scarlet won the team championship at the Summer Sizzle meet for the seventh year in a row. While the meet is certainly not a focus meet, especially for our senior swimmers who swam in the meet at the highest yardage volume of their training season, the results were still strong as our swimmers amassed 174 new best times and three new super sectional cuts - two by Alex Galinskiy (100 fly - 1:00.52, 200 fly - 2:12.40) and one by Kevin Wang (200 free - 2:01.10).
Heat Madness
Scarlet swimmers continued the fast swimming the next weekend at Heat Madness with 199 new best times. The swimming was only part of the story as our parents put on another great meet, making the chaos of organizing and working look easy, and allowing the swimmers from all teams to have a great experience. Great job by all!
Memorial Day Weekend and prior
The long course season started with a bang as Scarlet swimmers swam in the
Tiger Challenge Meet, the Memorial Day Meet at Rutgers, and the Grand Challenge
in Irvine, CA. Between the three meets, there were 159 new best times achieved, as well as
two team records by Kevin Doo.
Kevin Doo broke the 11-12 200IM record with a time of 2:27.43 at the
Memorial Day Meet, and the 400IM record with a time of 5:14.11 at the Tiger
Challenge meet.

More Great Results!
Three Scarlet swimmers continued their season in Buffalo, NY representing New Jersey on the Zone team. Kevin Doo, Justin Torres, and Karen Wang accounted for 116 individual points toward New Jersey's total of 796.5! The totals for the Scarlet swimmers in the meet were extremely impressive -
one New Jersey State Record, six team records, and four event
champions, including a 1-2 sweep of the boys 11-12 200 fly by
Justin Torres and Kevin Doo. Highlights are below -
Justin Torres set a New Jersey State record in the 11-12 200 IM with a time of 2:04.94 - he was the zone champion in the event. That time was a team record as well, one of five he set at the meet. The others were the 100 free (52.30), 200 fly (2:04.29 - zone champion), 200 free (1:52.90), and 200 breast (2:20.53 - zone champion). Justin also anchored New Jersey's zone champion 400 free relay which broke the eastern zone record.
Kevin Doo was the zone champion in the 11-12 50 fly (26.02), where he set new a team record, and swam the butterfly on New Jersey's zone champion 200 medley relay.
Great finish to the short course season! |

Championship Season
Continues
Scarlet swimmers were outstanding this past weekend at the New Jersey Junior Olympics. Our team finished third, scoring 2079.5 evenly balanced points - 1041.5 for the women and 1038 for the men. The overall numbers were impressive as eight swimmers were NJ state champions in 20 events, there were 15 team records set, 19 new sectional times, and 230 best times. Typically our senior level swimmers would swim limited events at JO's if they swam at all, but the travel schedule this season allowed for our entire senior team to swim. Even though many of these swimmers did not rest for this meet, their presence, combined with the age group swimmers, allowed us to show that we are extremely strong when we come together. Great job by everyone!
Highlights from the weekend are below -

College Conference Championships
The Scarlet Aquatic program is set up to produce swimmers who not only excel in the pool, but in the classroom as well. Our current class of 2011 is a testament to this ideal. Here are the swimmers who have committed to a college for the fall - Bernadette D'Alonzo will be attending the University of Pennsylvania next year. She will be joined in the Ivy League by teammate Susan Xiong who will be attending Columbia University. Christie Clarke has accepted an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Minnesota, Hannah Perna will attend the University of Connecticut, and Nick Ankosko will be joining several teammates from Scarlet at Penn State University. There are more signings to come - stay tuned!
Meanwhile our alumni continue to show why our program works - we have many swimmers in power conferences scoring for their teams. Week two features the Men's Big Ten Championships where James Capparell and Chris Cipolla are representing Penn State and Austin Steel is swimming for Indiana University. In the Ivy League Championships, Tara and Erin Henn are swimming for Dartmouth, in the Colonial Athletic Association Maegan McLaughlin is swimming for Towson University, and in the Mid-American Conference Renae Sharkey is swimming for the University of Buffalo.
Last weekend the women's BigTen Championships featured Ashley and Kristen Steenvooorden from Minnesota, Alexa Hetzel and Brynja Winnan from Penn State University, and Melissa Lang from the University of Michigan. In the ACC conference, Holly Rebovich from the University of Maryland, and Andrea King from Boston College swam last weekend, in the MAAC conference, Melanie Leonhard swam for Rider University and Nick and Deanna Petrelis represented Loyola University, and in the Patriot League Alena Pollitt and Jill Rann for swam for Lehigh University, and Andrew King swam for NYU in the University Athletic Association.
Good luck to all of our alumni this weekend! Keep track of all the action at collegeswimming.com championship central. |

NJ Senior State Championships
Scarlet won the team championship this past weekend at the Senior State Championship meet with the help of fast in season swimming combined with the superb efforts of our parents who combined with the parents of EEX and BMS to make the meet a real opportunity for February competition. Great job running the meet to our fantastic parent group! In the pool our swimmers swam to 60 new best times and three team records. Once again it was Justin Torres continuing the 11-12 boys assault on our record books. Justin set new team records in the 200 breast (2:23.56), 200 fly(2:07.88), and 200 free (1:54.93). January Update
Scarlet swimmers are busy preparing for the upcoming championship season. We get a taste of it this weekend as our senior swimmers enter the New Jersey Senior State Championship meet against other NJ teams who, like SAC, will be training hard and using the meet to tune up for later on in March. Remember that we are co-hosting the meet, so parents with swimmers entered in the meet are required to work the meet in some capacity. Job sign up will be at the pool as the meet is not a huge undertaking like our typical meets.
Looking back, the month of January was a successful one for our club. Below are some highlights -
Winterfest - Thanks to all of the parents who helped out with the running of the annual Winterfest meet. It was another well run weekend, and our parents hard work made the job of the swimmers and coaches easier. In the pool our swimmers swam to
338 new best times and three team records by 11-12 year olds Justin Torres
and Kevin Doo. Justin swam to new records in the 50 free (24.69), and 100 IM (1:00.56).
Kevin's new record
was in the 100 backstroke (1:02.07). Congratulations on a great weekend!
Cera-Ve - In the annual long course meet, Scarlet swimmers achieved 100 new best LC times, and once again Justin Torres was a team record breaker. Justin swam to a new record in the 11-12 200 IM (2:28.06).
Rutgers College Conference Carnival - The 11-12 boys 200 yard medley relay team of Eli Bogomolny, Henry Chen, Kevin Doo, and Justin Torres broke our team record by over three seconds with a time of 1:57.02 during the Rutgers Varsity meet, which also featured Scarlet alumni Ashley and Kristen Steenvoorden of the University of Minnesota, and Melanie Leonhard of Rider University.
Great job and we look forward to a great championship season! |

Great Finish to Season!
The end of the season was a successful one as our swimmers performed well in meets all over the country. Highlights are below:
Junior Olympics (Updated 9/7/10)
Thanks again to the team parents who volunteered their time and made donations to our hospitality. The effort of the parents is what makes us able to run great meets. Also, look for our alumni as they compete in the Pan Pacific Championships starting on August 18th in Irvine, CA. | COLUMBUS GRAND PRIX
The 22 Scarlet swimmers who qualified for individual events at sectionals spent last weekend in Columbus, OH for the Columbus Grand Prix at Ohio State University. Following the lead set by USA Swimming, the senior team has made LC swimming it's main focus since December. Instead of attending one of the SCY sectional meets, (we define sectionals as the Northeast sectional meet where the cuts are more difficult than any in the country) we attended the LC Grand Prix meet. Long Course swimming is the true measure of a swimmer's ability. Swimmers must have LC times to qualify for the Olympic Trials, the National Team, the World Youth Team, the National Select Camp, and the Zone Select Camp. None of those can be achieved with SCY times.
Competing against some of the world's top swimmers, our team did a great job, amassing three new Summer Junior National Cuts, three new SC Junior National cuts, one new Super Sectional cut, one New Jersey State Record, one team record, and 53 new best times.
New Summer Junior National cuts went to Chris Cipolla (400 IM - 4:37.40, 100 breast - 1:07.55), and Alex Galinskiy (100 free - 53.07).
New SC Junior National cuts went to Nick Ankosko (100 free - 53.99), Christie Clarke (200 fly - 2:20.47), and Bernadette D'Alonzo (100 free - 59.24).
Eric Stobbe smashed his own New Jersey State and team Record in the 200 back swimming to a time of 2:09.87. His old record was 2:13.44. His swim ranks him as the 30th fastest swimmer of all time in his age group. Eric also swam to a new Super Sectional cut in the 400 free (4:17.12).

JO WEEKEND
Congratulations to
all the swimmers and coaches for a great JO weekend!
Scarlet had a great
team showing despite our senior team essentially skipping the meet as
they prepare for the Ohio State Grand Prix meet.
Even with that, Scarlet
swimmers swam to one New Jersey State
Record, four team records, two new SCY
Junior National cuts, six new sectional cuts, and 190 new best times.
In addition, two age group swimmers will be attending Zones April
1-3. Highlights are below.
Eric Stobbe,
who was unrested as he prepares for the Ohio State Grand Prix, swam and
won three events at the JO meet.
He broke a 15 year old New Jersey State Record in the 13-14 200
back with a time of 1:51.96.
This time ranks as the 15th fastest time ever swum by an
American 13-14 year old boy.
This time is also Eric’s first SCY
Junior National cut.
Eric also broke the team
record in the 13-14 200 fly (1:57.34 – new sectional cut), and led off
the boys 13-14 400 medley relay in a team record in the 100 back (54.19)
as the boys team of Eric, Scott
Huang, Nick Riepe, and Dan Gayetsky destroyed our team record with a
time of 3:44.80 (old record was 3:51.67).
Christie Clarke
achieved the SCY Junior
National cut as well in the 500 free with a time of 4:56.90.
New sectional times
went to Joanna Han
(400 IM - 4:34.61), Scott Huang (1650 –
16:28.06, 500 free – 4:46.05),
Kristine Ng (200 fly – 2:08.50), and
Kevin Wang (200 free –
1:46.36).
Congratulations also
to Karen Wang and Julien Zhu
who will be attending the Zone meet April 1-3.
Great job to all and remember - the summer season
has already started! Let’s
get back to work!

Championship season ends as one of our best ever
The 2008 Olympic summer was a hard one to match but our 2009 LC championship season will go down as one of our best ever as our club continues to show that we are fulfilling our mission statement of having success at the highest levels of swimming. Scarlet swimmers and alumni ended the long course season with the following achievements -
Two World Records, two American Records, ten NJ State Records, and 34 team records. Two of our alumni swam in the World Championships in Rome and two are members of the USA Swimming National Team.
World/American Records and National Teamers
Our last two banquet speakers - both SAC alumni - have produced more evidence that we are fulfilling our mission statement and producing world class athletes here at Scarlet -
Rebecca Soni swam to a new World and American Record in the 100 breast at the World Championships in Rome in a time of 1:04.84 - becoming the first woman in history to break 1:05. She also swam to a new American Record in the 50 breast in a time of 30.11.
Stefan Hirniak was part of Canada's 800 freestyle relay which broke the short course meter World Record at the British Grand Prix in Leeds, England. Stefan split a 1:43.41 on his leg. He becomes the second swimmer Scarlet has produced to break a World Record.
Rebecca Soni will continue her run on the USA Swimming National Team and this season she will be joined by Ashley Steenvoorden who qualified based on her performance in the 800 free at the World Championship Trials in Indianapolis and the 400 free at the US Open.
Meet Results
Junior Olympics
Many, many thanks to the parents who volunteered and helped us run the newly formatted four day trials/finals JO meet. The meet was the fastest one in recent memory and allowed swimmers from all over the state to have a real championship meet to end their season or qualify for bigger meets in August. Our swimmers were outstanding as we swam to one new state record, nine team records, five spring junior cuts, four sectional cuts and 194 new best times.
Eric Stobbe swam to a new State and team record in the 13-14 200 back with a time of 2:14.14. Eric also set team records in the 800 free (8:47.72) and 100 back (1:03.41). Joanna Han set four team records in the 11-12 400 IM (5:20.74), 200 fly (2:39.15), 200 IM (2:33.21), and 200 breast (2:48.76).
